FLUSHING VILLAGE CLUB NEWS – GREEN ROOM AND ARCHIVE

Flushing Village Club: A Vital Asset to Our Community

Flushing Village Club continues to be a hub of activity and a vital resource for our community. Over the past year, we have made significant progress in enhancing our facilities, ensuring the Club remains a welcoming space for all.

Among the key improvements, we installed a brand-new kitchen and transformed one of the toilets into an Accessible facility, which also serves as a Public toilet for the village. In addition, we created a small Archive Room to house old photographs, documents, maps, and other historical treasures—many of which were previously stored under beds and in attics. This new space allows us to preserve and celebrate Flushing’s rich history in one dedicated location.

If you have any items you believe should be part of this archive, or if you would like to register something of historical significance, please contact Pam Rowan at 01326 373629.

Looking Ahead: Exciting Plans for 2024

Following discussions at our recent AGM, we are keen to build on our momentum and continue making improvements to the Club. One of the main proposals under consideration is the removal of the Green Room. Originally used as a changing room for school plays, it later became a workspace for the local hairdresser. However, due to its deteriorating condition—wooden walls and an asbestos roof—it is now damp and barely useable, particularly in winter. The hairdressing facilities have since been relocated to the old Surgery, now shared with Osteopath Nigel DeSalengre (07990 535335).

Creating a New Outdoor Space

Rather than rebuilding the Green Room, we propose replacing it with a covered pergola along the back wall, as well as leveling and improving the paving in the courtyard. This would provide a safe and attractive outdoor area, perfect for school activities, village events, and social gatherings. Events such as the Summer Show and Christmas Light Switch-On would greatly benefit from this improved space, and it would also make the hall even more appealing for private hire.

Additional Enhancements

Other proposed upgrades include:

  • A facelift for the front of the building, giving it a fresh and welcoming appearance.
  • Enhancing the passageway entrance to the hall and courtyard by boarding over the rough walls and displaying historical photographs of Flushing, offering an engaging glimpse into our village’s past.
